Album Updates

With the recent Raconteurs news and yesterday’s surprise Gnarls album(!), I thought I’d throw out a few other quick updates of those bands getting ready to release albums (likely in preparation for the summer touring season.

Coldplay-The new album is getting a Spanish title: Viva La Vida, from a painting by Mexican painter Frida Kahlo.

Mates of State-With a tour announcement likely coming soon, Rearrange Us should be out on May 20.

The Roots-Though political, Roots drummer ?uestlove says the album is not a downer.  Cover art and details here.

Ryan Adams-The young gentleman is working on what he calls a “second draft” of his new album, expected later this year.  Check out a blog written by Adams charting his experiences.

Kylie Minogue-With iTunes, amazon.com, and other internet-based music-purchasing sites, it is strange that there are different continental releases these days.  Nevertheless, Kylie will be releasing her latest album, X, in the US this spring.

New Music: Gnarls Barkley

As we said only yesterday, the Round Mound of (re)Sound, Sir Gnarls Barkley will be releasing an album later this year. Check out the teaser track below:

Run (song deleted as per artis request)

My initial thoughts are very positive. (Stan over at WhatIsUnseen will surely agree. On another note, a very thoughtful blog; recommended highly, though no MP3s) The Wilson-Pickett-sounding beat lays the rails for what promises to be a catchy song. The duo has been bitten by that irresistible urge to include a chorus of kids shouting into a mic. And that is a good thing. What I’m curious is, and a bit nervous about, is its longevity. Singles from sophomore albums, like this track from their upcoming The Odd Couple, sometimes tend to be catchy at first, but then slowly fade into obscurity.

So will “Run” be the Rudy 9ui11iani of 2008, or will it have a bit more staying power, akin to that of Barack Obama? Only time will tell.

[Update: I think this tune's gonna have staying power. On my third listen. Good times; Obama for sure.]
