Lollapalooza Countdown: 54 Days-Dr. Dog

I first heard Dr. Dog covering Architecture in Helsinki’s “Heart It Races,” and there are some days I still like it even more than the original. They have an album coming out in a few weeks, so it is wholly appropriate that they are profiled today on IfItsGood.
Fun Fact: They once played at the Lebowski Fest, a festival honoring the Coen Brothers’ cult classic The Big Lebowski. For this performance they covered many of the songs from the album’s soundtrack. The band has been playing together since 1999, almost 10 years now, but their biggest successes have come relatively recently, with their Takers and Leavers EP in 2006 and a full LP later that year called We All Belong. Enjoy some Dr. Dog:

Covers Tuesday I
As I sat in my classroom teaching all day, I could not get two songs out of my head. It is difficult to teach about the Spanish-American War (1898) while simultaneously mind-jiving to these two ditties in your noggin. First up is a cover of the Beyonce smash “Crazy in Love.” (As it so happens, I jokingly lied to my students earlier in the year that I had dated Beyonce Knowles. This was done only to make myself seem cool. It did not work.) This one is by The Magic Numbers. There is another cover of this song out there, maybe for another day…
The second is a song by Architecture in Helsinki that I thought, until today was a cover of a Dr. Dog song. Turned out to be vice versa (just like my prediction of the kids’ reaction to the news of my ex-beau). Such is life. Enjoy MP3s below.
Buy Beyonce ft. Jay-Z or The Magic Numbers/MP3: The Magic Numbers-Crazy in Love
Buy Architecture in Helsinki or Dr. Dog/MP3: Dr. Dog-Heart It Races
By coincidence or not, these were both discovered by my new favorite podcast, KCRW’s “Today’s Top Tune.” iTunes them.
