We’ve previously posted on Jay-Z’s outrageous performance of Oasis’ Wonderwall at Glastonbury 2008. HOV clinched the closer with, given the context, arguably the best cover ever. A repost of the video here:
A few days ago, in New Haven, CT, Ryan Adams gave an emotional, somewhat tripped-out performance of the song. Check it out:

Not the Stones’ most depressing song (we’ll save that one for a Sunday Songs post), but “Wild Horses” is one of their best mellow pieces. Check out fellow-mellow(ers) Iron and Wine’s cover:

Haven’t done Covers on a Tuesday for about a month now, but as per the request of Glen Carpenter, here is an acoustic cover of Justice’s remix-happy hit from last year, D.A.N.C.E. (performed by a band with a great name–Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly.):
And…just for kicks…check out Fucked Up’s cover of another Justice song:

Here is an artist that I’m surprised at how few covers I have come across of her music. Despite being one of the most influential female musicians of the past 25 years, I have found only one existing cover of her music on my iTunes, and when searching HypeMachine, I found relatively little as well. She is one of the most prolific artists of our generation, producing great music in three consecutive decades. Who is this I speak of…?

Covers Tuesday I
As I sat in my classroom teaching all day, I could not get two songs out of my head. It is difficult to teach about the Spanish-American War (1898) while simultaneously mind-jiving to these two ditties in your noggin. First up is a cover of the Beyonce smash “Crazy in Love.” (As it so happens, I jokingly lied to my students earlier in the year that I had dated Beyonce Knowles. This was done only to make myself seem cool. It did not work.) This one is by The Magic Numbers. There is another cover of this song out there, maybe for another day…
The second is a song by Architecture in Helsinki that I thought, until today was a cover of a Dr. Dog song. Turned out to be vice versa (just like my prediction of the kids’ reaction to the news of my ex-beau). Such is life. Enjoy MP3s below.
Buy Beyonce ft. Jay-Z or The Magic Numbers/MP3: The Magic Numbers-Crazy in Love
Buy Architecture in Helsinki or Dr. Dog/MP3: Dr. Dog-Heart It Races
By coincidence or not, these were both discovered by my new favorite podcast, KCRW’s “Today’s Top Tune.” iTunes them.
