well it´s only one of the most recognisable tunes because it´s a rip off of one of the most recognisable tunes of previous decades by the Rolling Stones.
They (the Verve) didn´t get a penny did they?

Mike, you are in fact correct. The previous decade were those marvelous ’60s.
“I’m out of wack here, this is serious lawyer shit. If The Verve can write a better song, they can keep the money.”-Mick Jagger

in the 60ies, the stones themselves had to file a lawsuit against someone claiming “the last time” (an orchestral version of which is the source for bittersweet symphony’s strings) was ripped off from an american folk-classic..
so:
theres this nice old song
versions of this get played by people like james brown
stones write a song, inspired by this old song to some extent.
people say, “you done stoled that melody!”
mick and keith go to court and win.
some dude records an orchestral album of stones songs.
ashcroft samples orchestral version for project with unkle, some 30 years later.
ends up using it for a verve song instead.
song goes big.
keith and mick realise what they missed and ask for cash.
lol.
